Christmas in Zante E-mail
MelomakaronaChristmas is celebrated all over Greece with customs that are universal in character, but differ in detail from place to place. In Zante, on Christmas Eve, every housewife without fail bakes a 'Christopsomo', literally a 'Christ-bread'. This is made in large sweet loaves of various shapes, with decorated images carved on the crust, usually representing some aspect of the family's life and work.
Also, Zakynthos seems to be inundated by turkeys. Young turkeys are brought over from mainland Greece and are fed on fallen olives and other tasty treats that make their meat tender and juicy. Egg and lemon soup is the traditional Christmas meal on Zakynthos. It is made with the wings, neck and intestines. The recipe for the egg and lemon sauce gives a very rich, creamy soup.
