Easter in ZakynthosIf you're lucky enough to be traveling in Greece during the Greek Orthodox Easter weekend, you'll have an opportunity to experience all of the rich pageantry and deep religious devotion expressed by the Greeks at Eastertime.

Easter is one of the favorite times to be in Greece for couple of reasons. First of all even if you are not a devout Christian you can't help but be moved by the ceremonies and the way life begins again on Easter Sunday after winter and 40 days of fasting.

The celebration of Holy Week on Zakynthos island is considered to be unique and unforgettable both for locals and visitors. At noon, on Good Friday, crowds of worshippers take part in the procession of the Crucified through the town. The Epitaphios (bier) which has been decorated with flowers by the girls through Thursday night, is taken from the church and with the bells tolling mournfully, is carried through the streets in a solemn procession at 03:00am.
In the early hours of Holy Saturday morning Bishop announces the Resurrection at sunrise.

Easter: Good Friday-Easter Monday. Vesper evening is on Good Friday and every church decorates an Pascha (Easter): on that Day Greeks traditionally eat lamb, spit-roasted on charcoal and families get together to eat, drink, talk and dance.
